This Thursday, 8th May 2025, we celebrate the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe. On 8th May 1945, millions of people across Europe rejoiced when it was announced that Germany had surrendered after six long years of war. Here in Britain the day was declared a national holiday, with street parties taking place up and down the length and breadth of the country.
To mark this momentous event, Axminster Heritage Centre are holding a special VE Day 80 Coffee Morning from 9am – 12pm in the Bradshaw Meeting Room. Join us at 9am as we raise the VE Day 80 flag before settling down with friends to enjoy traditional 1940s tea and cake. We will also have coffee and biscuits, and orange juice for those who prefer a cold drink. Tea or coffee and a slice of cake for £1.50, with additional slices of cakes available for £1.00.
For all you bookworms out there we will also have a wide range of secondhand books and DVD’s on sale, all based around the theme of war (fiction and non-fiction).
As well as our event don’t forget there are lots of other events happening during VE Day 80, such as the Royal British Legion Axminster Branch who are holding a VE Day 80 Service at the War Memorial on the Minster Green between 10:30am – 11:10am (service begins at 10:45am). The Women’s Branch of the Royal British Legion are also holding a flower show in The Minster Church from 8th – 11th May.
